This large butterfly species native to Papua New Guinea was named after Danish royalty, so it makes sense that the females are the largest members of the species. For the first time this past fall we were graced with the presence of Zebra Longwing Butterflies, Heliconius charithonia.These big bold beautiful butterflies are 'sometimes visitors' to the warm southern and more tropical regions of Louisiana and are permanent residents . Far from rare, these insects span from Canada in the north to Colombia in the south.
